From Finance Analyst to Global Analyst: How Paolo Conquered His Ego and Unlocked an International Career

Paolo, a Finance & Business Strategy Associate with 3+ years of experience, decided to learn Data Analytics at RevoU and broke into the international job market as an Analyst at Delivery Tasker, a global tech company.

Many people think that switching careers into data means throwing away every year of professional experience that came before. But for Paolo M Hernandez, his journey at RevoU wasn't a directionless career swerve — it was a mission to upgrade his own operating system.

Before RevoU, Paolo was a Finance & Business Strategy Associate at Starmika. With more than three years of experience, he was used to seeing the business through a financial lens. But he felt something was missing.

"After 3+ years in Finance, I felt like I had the fuel but the car wasn't complete. Excel and intuition could only take me so far. At one point I realized: if I could speak with data more deeply, the business decisions I made would be far sharper. RevoU became the answer to that operating-system upgrade."

Today, Paolo has realized one of his biggest ambitions: breaking into the international job market as an Analyst at Delivery Tasker, a global tech company.

How did this bowling athlete and Spotify-published musician conquer his ego, rework his job-hunting strategy, and win over a foreign CEO? Read on.

Unlocking a "Cheat Code" Called Data Analytics

For Paolo, the international world was nothing new. Born to a Filipino father, English was the everyday language at home. Through his bowling hobby, he had also been competing and building connections with people abroad for years.

When he set his sights on the global professional stage, Data Analytics was the most logical golden ticket.

"Data Analytics is relevant everywhere. You don't need to explain at length to overseas clients or teams — the numbers and the insight speak for themselves."

Even with that ambition, the learning process at RevoU still held surprises for Paolo. He vividly remembers the magic moment he fell in love with the field.

"The most memorable moment was the first time my SQL query ran perfectly and the result directly answered a real business question. It felt like a cheat code had just been activated."

For Paolo, surviving the regular RevoU class came down to changing the mindset. Instead of memorizing formulas, he focused on the business essence behind them. "Syntax can be Googled, but the way of thinking has to be trained," he adds.

A Love-Hate Relationship with RevoU NEXT

After finishing the core class and pushing through the heavy DEEPP Project, Paolo moved on to the intensive job-prep stage at RevoU NEXT. This is where his mindset was truly tested.

Paolo openly describes his relationship with RevoU NEXT as a love-hate one.

"There were moments where it felt exhausting, a little irritating, and I just wanted to come up for air. But at the same time, I enjoyed the process of building my CV and portfolio. It was deeply satisfying to see all that hard work finally represent me accurately."

Aggressive Strategy: 23 Applications in the First Week

Paolo's high ambition initially led him to a "spray and pray" approach. When the target was at least 6 applications per week, Paolo thought, "If the weekly target is 6, why not send 3 to 5 applications a day?"

The result? In the first week alone, he fired off 23 applications.

But reality was less rosy than the math of quantity. Many of those applications got no response. From that, Paolo got a valuable reality check.

"I fell into the trap of applying to roles that looked like a fit on the surface, but were actually far from what I could offer. That just wastes everyone's energy. So it isn't about reining in ambition — it's about pointing that ambition in the right direction."

Setting Aside His Ego with Career Support (SDC)

By Week 4, Paolo realized his strategy needed a full reset. Armed with the data of dozens of rejections he had collected himself, he sat down for an intensive session with a Strategic Career Coach (SDC) at RevoU.

This is where the turning point happened. His SDC delivered an insight that humbled him:

"You don't need to look great to every company. You just need to look extremely relevant to the right one."

At that time, Paolo had two CV versions: one fully focused on Finance & Business Strategy, and another that also listed his freelance experience as a Project Executive. His SDC honestly pointed out that including unrelated freelance experience was actually noise that left recruiters confused about his career focus.

Taking that feedback in stride required real openness.

"The ego is real. But my principle is simple: if the approach I'm using doesn't work, it doesn't mean I failed — it means I just got new data. There's no point being defensive when the field is telling you something different."

Paolo overhauled his entire job-search toolkit, split the two CVs apart, and only sent the version most relevant to each role. Interestingly, that simple decision paid off: he ended up landing a job using the optimized Finance-focused CV.

For Paolo, the SDC at RevoU was more than just a career advisor. On a scale of 1–10, he gave them a confident 10. "She was both my mentor and a role model. I absorbed every perspective she shared because it came from real experience, not just program theory," he says gratefully.

Live Coding in Front of the CEO and Validating the RevoU Skill Stack

The peak of his journey landed at Delivery Tasker. The recruitment process was intense — Paolo was interviewed directly by the CEO.

In that user interview session, Paolo was asked to do a live Excel test. Thanks to years of financial background, he sailed through it confidently and naturally.

But the big surprise came when the CEO suddenly started asking SQL queries — a technical data skill that was not actually listed as required in the job posting.

"The role didn't really need SQL at the time. But the CEO said, if a lot of big data needs to be processed later, he wanted to know whether I could be the one he relies on. I smiled to myself in that moment, realizing everything I learned at RevoU was being used beyond initial expectations."

On top of that, the CEO — an Australian — was initially puzzled and asked about the standardized BNSP certification (Indonesia's National Professional Certification Agency) that Paolo earned through RevoU. Once Paolo explained how strict and rigorous the competency exam was, the CEO was visibly impressed.

That's when Paolo knew his past financial expertise and his new data analytics skill had finally clicked into place.

Paolo's Message for Anyone Still on the Fence

To close out his story, Paolo has a strong message for anyone still feeling intimidated, scared, or unsure about taking the leap into a career switch or chasing a role at a global company:

"If you want something, you have to be ready to pay the price for it. Nothing comes instant; nothing comes without sacrifice. But the most important thing is the courage to make the decision. Because in the end, if you believe you're the best in your story, make people believe it as well."
